What distracts and gets in the way of having regular quiet times?

What doesn’t! Finding other things simply easier to get on with: listening to music, watching shows, chatting with my husband, playing games, tidying, etc. None of these things are in themselves bad, but they become unhelpful and even detrimental when they replace spending time in communion with God.

What encourages you or helps you to have regular quiet times?

That I cannot function in a godly way without communicating with God regularly! My capacity to love, be patient, courageous for the gospel, and ever other fruitful thing is well diminished, to say the least, without it coming from the source of all those things!

What has most helped you grow as a Christian over the past two years?

Gosh, loads. I’ve realised more than ever how crucial being a part of a church community is, and how serving and worshipping God is not an individual experience but is cultivated by being with others who are doing the same thing. I am so grateful for the slamming teaching at ACC. I know I’ve learned more of God and the gospel then I could articulate. I think studying books of the Bible as a whole has been so helpful. Going through Romans and Revelation has really clarified so much of what it means to live as a Christian and the hope we have as we look forward to Christ’s return. Following in the example of others has also played a huge role. I am so grateful for all the godly people I’m surrounded by who live sacrificially by faith in lots of different ways.

Do you have any thoughts/wisdom on how to get the most out of Sunday mornings/ home groups/ meeting Christ friends during the week?

The set up of our Sunday mornings lend themselves to getting to find out how people are doing- which I love. I think taking advantage of talking to people in the break times is a good way to use them well. If you’re a natural drifter like me, I think doing whatever it takes to stay tuned in with the sermon is also good, whether that means following the notes or writing some of your own, or just disciplining your mind.

At house groups I think just being willing to chip in your opinion, knowledge, questions, or thoughts is always really helpful, as it’s great a dynamic having everyone in the group chipping in.

In meeting Christian friends during the week, it’s great to start by using some spare time to do it! I know how busy our schedules can get and meeting with one another and our non-Christian friends usually takes some initiative. Having people who you can be honest with about your struggles and encouragements who will pray for you is a great way to be accountable as a Christian and to see victory over sin and growth in Christ likeness.

What distracts and gets in the way of having regular quiet times?

My own selfishness and the business of life in general. Forgetting how great time with God is.

What encourages you or helps you to have regular quiet times?

I think in the early mornings when I know I have to face the pressures/stresses the day will bring my motivation is that I am really aware I need God. (Often I use ’Closer to God’ bible notes by S.U. which despite it’s controversial title are really encouraging and can fit in before work)

What has most helped you grow as a Christian over the past two years?

Gods grace to me especially ACC - Their example and their love for God. The Romans series was really helpful. Also some other lovely Christian friends who are always really honest with me and encourage me to grow.

Do you have any thoughts/wisdom on how to get the most out of Sunday mornings/ home groups/ meeting Christ friends during the week?

Not any major wisdom sorry! But I think I’ve found it so good to keep meeting as God in his grace encourages me both when I’m feeling positive and also when I’m feeling tired and rebellious.
