Jesus loved eating and drinking! No I don’t mean he was a glutton or a drunk (although he was accused of that), in reality it wasn’t so much the food and drink he was interested in as the occasion. Jesus loved eating and drinking with people!
Now this isn’t a new observation, as Tim Chester points out this is all the way through Luke’s gospel where the catch phrase ‘at table’ is coined, but while it might not be novel it is important. Jesus knew that eating with people was important relationally, a key indicator of friendship and concern and a great place for conversations and debate. The early church carried it on, eating together frequently and imbibing a hospitality culture among its leaders and members.
All of which mean that for us as a church we too love eating and drinking with people, both in homes and sometimes together as a whole church like this Sunday.
